Bloomsburg University-
At a forum held on campus Monday evening Bloomsburg University President David Soltz apologized for the events that took place during the Homecoming dance on November 1st. Soltz reviewed the recommendations released in a report from the panel investigating the incident. Soltz then took questions and comments from several audience members. During questioning from students Soltz said that police may have overreacted to the situation. The panel issued 42 recommendations in the report first released to the BU community on Monday. The entire report and video of the event can be reviewed by clicking the links below. Two words - Personal accountability.
It seems to me this issue is largely about alcohol abuse as is the case in many (dare I say all) State sponsored college campus's?
I don't care what color you are, act respectable if you want to be treated with respect. Yes, it is unfortunate that the acts of a few (read "drunks") negatively affected the group as a whole, but why aren't the students who had the good sense to come to the dance "straight" in order to enjoy a night out with friends angry with the bone heads in the crowd who caused all this nonsense?
Then there's a "pro ball player" there with his entourage who naturally thinks he's better than everybody else and decides to go to the front of the line which in turn caused a rush of people threating to smash out the doors?
Why isn't he being called to the carpet for his actions?
Bottom line, college is supposed to be a place for learning and shaping our future leaders. Instead, it would seem apparent to the casual observer that in all too many cases, it is instead a place for over the top parties and seems to foster a "screw you " attitude in many of the students.
As a parent with a child in his 2nd year of a 4 yr degree in another university, I cant help but wonder how many students would think partying was so important if THEY were paying the bill rather than the taxpayer or the parents?
Wise up kids. Life's NOT a party!

president soltz shoudlnt be apologizing to these kids...they need to hold themselves responsible for their own actions. nothing pisses me off even more that people who play the race card every time something doesnt go their way. it gets really old really fast and news flash thats life get used to it. im sure your parents wouldnt be happy to know that you got pepper sprayed but hey if you provoke the cops youre gonna get the consequences. thats how the REAL WORLD works. however i do agree with the fact that Bloom Police Chief has no authority to take control of an incident on the University grounds and run things his way like he is in town hall having a grand old time. on state grounds the only people who have that authority are the psp.

Maybe the president should look on ebay and see if he could buy a backbone there. Take some responsibility for your lack of action in disciplining these idiots. and stop passing the buck with your liberal blase attitude. It is no wonder why there are riots there year after year after during his tenure. Stop criticizing the police who are left clean up the mess from the lack of discipline and accountability there. It is time to start expelling "students" who are continually acting like animals.
Failure to plan is a plan to fail. Plan that your students are going to riot every year and advise them that if they do they are expelled. Videotape, identify and expel like PSY does.

All you have to do is watch the video. At no point were there kids acting out of order. But after the police started cornering kids and telling them to move thats when people got flustered because they had nowhere to go they were cornered in by all sides then the police started pushing kids and then out of nowhere a enormous mace gun goes off and hits everyone withing five feet and there was about 5 people some cops and kids why was the police spraying the other cops? Its clear as day why the police acted they way they did i don't know how they could make it even more obvious...

Oh Mark, do you think that you are somehow "above" everyone here because you had to mention that your child is getting an educations somewhere else? If you think that partying only goes on at Bloomsburg or the other state owned universities, you are so so wrong. How niave. Didn't you see what happened this school year with the riots at Bucknell and Penn State, just to name a few?? Bloomsburg's business/accounting program is among the top in the nation, very hard courses, and I had the CEO of a company once tell me that the would rather hire BU accounting grads than Penn State grads because of the program. So don't discount this university.

You may be the person to help with the makevoer, mascarah. We need a little darker color around the eyelashes and eyebrows. Thanks again for the "masacara" tips.

You honestly think that people "with money" know how to act and don't act like drunken inbreds??? HMMM...wrong!! You can't stereotype crimes based on financial worth.

If you venture out to the neighboring towns, you'd see that "drunk inbread (sic) rednecks" aren't wandering the streets causing trouble. Most of the alcohol-related crime in Bloomsburg comes from BU students. But you are right, people with money generally know how to behave in public. However, their spoiled children in college often do not.
And what's with the need to insult people just for living in a small "hick" town? Don't try to feign an air of superiority, because it's a lie. How do I know? Because you go to BU, which says one (or both) of two things: a) you couldn't afford a better school, so your family doesn't have as much money as you make it seem, or b) you aren't intelligent enough to attend a better university. So which is it, are you poor, dumb, or both? There's no shame in either option, and you'll be better off the sooner you realize it.

| Quite the contrary…. my son is indulging (against our wishes I might add) in the whole "college life experience". Fortunately he has kept himself out of any kind of trouble thus far. I only mentioned he was attending elsewhere......well because he is! You are waaaaay off base assuming that I think I am "better than anyone else" for any reason!
Get real. The clowns who don't know how to act in public are the ones who cause these kinds of problems....and you know, it all too often turns out to be the spoiled rotten rich kids who have no respect for anything or anyone. It is they who are usually the problem.
All you have to do is look at how these "educated idiots" trash the frat houses around town. They live like drunken bums and destroy the houses they are renting with their drunken revelry. It's disgusting and shameful!
But not to worry, because daddy will pay for it all right? Then of course there's those “special ones” getting a free ride to college because their the right color or social status on MY TAX DOLLARS I might add, while my wife and have to work two jobs to help pay our kids way through school.
Sorry, but this whole situation just plain sucks and like I said, personal accountability / responsibility is the key. As Bill O’reilly says….put down the kool-aid and WISE UP!.

well... as a former student... i myself have seen what goes on with students and have interacted with them. i've never personally joined in with the negative scene such as drinking etc. however, every morning when i went into class, i would hear the numerous stories of how smashed others were the night before. the 1st few days of class, some kids already had alcohol poisoning. this is not the parents fault. i would never put this upon my parents. the students make their own decisions and if they want to continue saying they are being discrimnated against for whatever reason, they should have thought before continuing on with their actions. on that campus, or anywhere for that matter, everyone is equal and no one is better than the other. the excuse of getting discrimnated against due to race is getting ridiculous. both white and colored make the same decisions. if they are tired of being discriminated against, then wise up and realize what the consequences could be BEFORE you do something stupid then try to play the "race card" to save you butt. seriously. and this college does not only consist of redneck inbreds. it consists of young adults and even average adults wanting to further their education and begin a career. however, i witnessed many kids saying "i'm only here because my parents wanted me to go to college some where and this is the 'party school' so i said, hey, if i can get in there then i'll be fine!" as i sat there working my butt off to get good grades, it was ashame to listen to these kids saying that. this really is what tax dollars are going towards and many are getting a free ride with the help and tax dollars of everyone including my family and i. so kids, wisen the heck up and get a good head on your shoulders. when you get to be your parents age, you're going to regret putting partying before an education.

My family member who attends BU also got accepted at Penn State, Temple, etc. However, going to BU gave an opportunity to participate in a nationally recognized Business/accounting program, and to save some money for LAW SCHOOL. NOT, I repeat, NOT attending BU because not smart enough to get into any other schools. It's just that, why be in debt 10 times more even BEFORE entering grad school??? Talk to you in 5 years and see whose doing better!
